Swahili Village, Beltsville MD

How often have you had authentic Kenyan food in a restaurant decorated perfectly to reflect the Kenyan culture and feel? Swahili Village in Beltsville, MD, is your best bet! Very close to exit 25 on 495 past Ikea, they offer a full selection of Kenyan dishes that will make anyone’s mouth water. Naturally, there are plenty of vegetarian options, but the fish and and the steak dishes are definitely the ones to try here! Highly recommended!

This was one of my first few actual African places to shoot and I absolutely loved the fish and tomato gravy kind of pairing besides nicely done steak (and later on my absolute favorite – jolloff rice). Not the fastest kind of shoot, but 9/10 I got to keep some of the props and they were absolutely worth it compared to the usual American fare I honestly was growing tired of. It also pleases me to see how different parts of the world approach similar dishes in radically different ways – sambusas and samosas for instance. India uses flakier, thick pastry for their quick snack bites, while African countries use thin crust that fries to be more crispy.
